Bye!

As the closing video for the 2024 Orphan Film Symposium, Bye! is a 47-second stop-motion animation that recreates archive footage provided by the Symposium’s presenters. I incorporated cyanotype and embroidery as artistic media to reflect the Symposium’s mission of rediscovering and preserving orphan films.

Not Ready to Leave

Born in 1949, Fengxia Sun’s life reflects over seventy years of historical change in Chinese society. Once part of a prominent village family, the Cultural Revolution brought persecution and interrupted her education. She later worked at the state-owned Kaiping Coal Mine but was laid off when it was privatized in the 1990s. After the mine’s shutdown, she returned to farming before joining the Villager’s committee in her sixties, where she was eventually elected as a member. Now in her seventies and ineligible for re-election due to age limits, Sun continues to volunteer daily at the committee.

As Sun’s granddaughter and the director of this documentary, I followed her daily life, capturing her work at the Villagers’ committee and the local public cemetery, as well as moments spent with family. Through documenting her routines and conducting interviews, I sought to explore her life stages, personal history, and enduring connections to family, community, and homeland.
